Trekking & Walking in The Moroccan Desert
Sahara Trekking
The Sahara Desert is unlike any other place, and trekking across it is truly a leisurely experience. When experienced from the peaks of the huge dune fields, desert trekking delivers a genuine sense of vastness and seclusion.
Our illustrative hiking trips range from 3 days and up, including wilderness camping in the pristine “Iriqui National Park” and distant paths. The only other people you could run into are possibly nomadic families or the occasional shepherd.
Living in the desert allows one the pleasure of listening to music while sitting around a campfire and sleeping under the sky. The meal’s main part, freshly prepared bread grilled on the hot sand close to the bonfire, is served along with many cups of strong Moroccan tea. Nothing moves fast in the desert.
We progressively follow the vast sand dunes that along the course of the Ziz valley, which is presently underground. The dune sea, commonly referred to as the dunes or “erg,” is around 40 kilometers long and 300 feet tall. The Erg Chebbi and Erg Znaigui dunes, two other dune fields on our trekking routes, provide comparable eye-catching perspectives of the Sahara Desert.
The Sahara Desert’s landscape, which is formed by wind and occasionally rain, is composed of sand dunes, hamada, dry valleys and lakes, and salt flats. You could also be startled to observe palm trees, tamarisk and acacia trees, and other types of vegetation in the desert. After the seasonal rains, winter is a lush time of year, and in January and February, baby camels arrive after their moms have gone to graze.
